Jewellery of varying degrees of quality can be purchased all over Mexico. In Mexico City, Zacatecas, San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Gaudalajara - of course!, San Juan del Rio, even in Tijauna or Cancún (known for very different reasons), nice pieces can be found.
However, nowhere can surpass Taxco for the sheer scale, scope or imagination of it's jewellery production. It has been, for the past eighty years THE centre of production for jewellery of the finest quality in the whole of the country.
Of course, other countries supply jewellery. Mass-produced and run-of-the-mill pieces can be bought anywhere. If there is a choice between sweat-shop produced baubles - or a work of art produced by the excellence of generations of Mexican artisans, then there really isn't much of a choice, is there?
