Pure silver, like pure gold, is too soft to be practical and is usually alloyed. Most commonly copper is used since it greatly toughens the alloy without detracting from the bright shine characteristic of silver.

Silver, by law, MUST be stamped. Sterling Silver is always stamped .925 (in the U.K. this number is incorporated in a hallmark)

Sterling is the alloy most commonly used in silversmithing. The product consists of 925 parts of silver per thousand. Hence the worldwide use of '.925' as mark of purity.

Our company supplies .925 Sterling and Silver of a higher purity - .950, which was, in days gone by known as 'Mexican Silver'. In the U.K. this is roughly equivalent to the purer 'Britannia Silver'.
